The Yamane district of Aoya-cho in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, has been a papermaking region for generations. My great-grandmother, born in 1900 (Meiji 33), left her family home—where washi paper had long been made—to start her own washi papermaking business. The craft was carried on by the second generation, my grandfather Kuniyoshi (a former Traditional Craftsman), and the third generation, my father Norito (a certified Traditional Craftsman). Today, I, Yutaka, represent the fourth generation, continuing the family business together with my father. Our foundation is choosing good raw materials and sparing no effort or labor across the many steps of making washi, and we aim to keep this handcraft going by taking on new applications suited to each era.
